Barnstaple Fair

Description: This ancient ‘end of harvest’ fair starts the end of September each year. Originally it was an agricultural market and employment fair lasting three days: one day for horses, another for cattle and the other for sheep. Farm labourers were employed ‘until Barnstaple Fair’; they’d then come to the town to squander their savings at the cheapjack stalls or in the local taverns. Nowadays there is a vast funfair (second, in size, only to Nottingham Goose Fair), which is in full swing from late afternoon until midnight for each of the four days.
Location: Seven Bretheren Bank Barnstaple
